Web Accessibility
The City of Redmond is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability.

We are actively working to increase the accessibility of our website. This website endeavors to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and W3C technologies, which are the industry standards for optimal usability by all web visitors.

The web tool that converts our content into pages performs much of the page layout work, and automates the following accessibility items for us:
  • Structure for viewing in text only mode
  • No tables for page level structural layout
  • Font sizes can be scaled up or down

Despite best efforts, there are areas of the website that fall outside of intended web accessibility targets. On the current Redmond.gov site, the following items are examples of deficiencies we are aware of, and are making a plan of action to modify.
  • Online forms are not tagged with labels
  • Formatting issues that affect alternative browsing like: misuse of headers, redundant or irrelevant tool tip text, missing or incomplete image alternative text
  • Not all navigation meets contrast guidelines
  • The page titles are not coded as headers by the web system, so do not get included in an outline view
  • A high dependence on content provided in PDF or image format only

Ongoing improvements

Updated February 2019

The City of Redmond has selected a company to implement the new system. The development phase of the project continues into 2019.

The new website is targeted for completion in the second quarter of 2019. This is intended to provide an upgrade to web usability and accessibility for our online customers.

Training that includes accessibility awareness for Redmond.gov content editors is provided ongoing. This is intended to improve the experience for users of all browsers, including specialty browsers.
